Industry Trivia – Why Doesn't Hong Kong Have Postal Codes?

Postal codes (ZIP codes) typically consist of 5 to 7 digits used to code buildings within a country or city based on different streets or districts. Each street or building has a unique numerical code to enhance the delivery efficiency of postal services.

Although Hong Kong is an international metropolis, it has not introduced a postal code system, mainly due to the following two reasons: 

  • 1 Advanced Optical Sorting System is Efficient Enough

    Hong Kong Post utilizes an advanced mechanical letter sorting system equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This system automatically recognizes over 90% of printed or handwritten English addresses, as well as printed Chinese addresses, sorting mail directly into individual delivery beats. Even without postal codes, the local mail delivery efficiency remains remarkably high: over 99% of local mail is delivered within two working days, and the same 99% delivery rate within two working days applies to inbound airmail upon arrival in Hong Kong.

  • 2 Introducing postal codes offers little benefit to efficiency.

    Hong Kong has over 3 million residential and commercial addresses packed into high-rise buildings. Assigning a unique postal code to every single address would require up to 15 digits. This would be inconvenient for the public and defeat the goal of simple mail sorting.

    Meanwhile, Hong Kong Post's automated sorting system already handles over 90% of English and Chinese addresses accurately, delivering over 99% of local and inbound airmail within two working days. Because the current system is already so efficient, introducing postal codes is unnecessary.
